DocuSign Alternative for Developers
DocuSign's developer API starts at $50/month and still expects a finished document before it can send anything for signature. Their free developer account can't even be used for real signatures. CraftMyPDF generates the PDF from your data and routes it for signature in the same API call, on your existing credits, at roughly a ninth of DocuSign's per-envelope cost.
The differences that matter for a workflow that starts with data, not a finished document.
| Feature | CraftMyPDF eSign API | DocuSign Developer API |
|---|---|---|
| Generates the PDF from data | ✓ | ✗ (upload a finished document) |
| Same API call for generation + signing | ✓ | N/A (signing-only API) |
| Cost per envelope | ~$0.14 | ~$1.25 (Starter plan) |
| Free tier produces legally valid signatures | ✓ | ✗ (sandbox only) |
| Separate subscription required | ✗ (existing PDF credits) | ✓ ($50-$480/month) |
| Embedded signing below Enterprise tier | N/A | ✗ (custom tier only) |
| Best for | Teams generating PDFs from data that also need signatures | Enterprises needing notarization, ID verification, and a full agreement platform |
Built for teams already generating PDFs from data who want one predictable bill instead of a second vendor and a second subscription just to collect a signature.
DocuSign's API signs documents you already have. It doesn't generate them. If your contract, offer letter, or invoice starts as data in your database, you still need a separate PDF generation step before DocuSign can touch it. CraftMyPDF generates the PDF from your template and data, then routes it for signature, same endpoint, same API key, one call.
CraftMyPDF's e-signature runs about $0.14 per signed document. DocuSign's Starter developer plan is $600 billed annually for 40 envelopes/month, about $1.25 per envelope. For teams sending hundreds of contracts a month, that gap adds up fast.
DocuSign's free developer account explicitly states that envelopes sent through it "are not valid for legal purposes." You have to upgrade to a paid plan before you can send a single real signature request. CraftMyPDF's free plan generates 5 real, legally valid signed documents every month, at no cost, from day one.
Scoped to what matters for a developer choosing between the two.

DocuSign is a well-built, widely-trusted enterprise platform, and its brand recognition on the receiving end of a signature request is hard to replicate. Here's where it wins on capability too.
DocuSign does offer embedded signing, but only on their custom Enhanced/Enterprise plans (5-user minimum, contact sales). If you need a fully embedded, white-labeled signing experience and enterprise-scale support, DocuSign's Enterprise tier is built for that, though it comes with custom pricing.
DocuSign Connect delivers real-time webhook notifications as an envelope moves through its lifecycle. CraftMyPDF's eSign status is trackable on the Signed Documents dashboard, but doesn't currently push webhook events. If your workflow depends on real-time status callbacks, DocuSign handles that natively.
DocuSign includes ISO 27001 and WCAG 2.0 Level AA accessibility compliance on every developer plan, and supports Advanced and Qualified eIDAS signature levels (AeS, QeS) on their Enhanced tier. CraftMyPDF's eSign covers SOC 2 Type II and eIDAS at the Simple Electronic Signature (SES) level. If your compliance requirements go beyond SES, DocuSign covers more ground.
Beyond signing, DocuSign offers a Notary API for remote online notarization, an ID Evidence API for identity verification, a Rooms API for complex transactions, and a broader IAM and CLM ecosystem. CraftMyPDF is a PDF generation and e-signature API, not a full agreement lifecycle platform. If your workflow needs notarization or identity verification built in, DocuSign's specialized APIs cover that.
DocuSign's developer plans are priced separately from any other DocuSign product. CraftMyPDF's e-signature runs on your existing credits.
